Over the years, my husband and I have taken surveys, participated in focus groups and found other clever ways to boost our income.

We started to manage our money effectively and finally learnt how to build real savings. And we didn’t think that what we were doing was essentially getting “free money“. But when I look back over the years, it’s clear that using these tools and resources played a big part in building our savings.

Some of the ways to get free money throughout this post have helped us in small ways, others in bigger ways. Either way, they all add up and have made a big difference to our personal finance.

So today, I’m going to show you a variety of places you can start using and learn how to get free money pretty quickly!

Many of these resources are what we’ve personally used and have worked well for us over the years.

Without further ado, let’s look at some ways you can get free money today.

1. Refinance Your Student Loan Debt

This first one is for anyone out there with student loan debt. According to Forbes and statistics in 2022, student loan debt is now the second highest consumer debt category!

Student loans can be hugely burdensome. But, there could be a way for you to save money with refinancing at a lower interest rate.

You can compare student loan refinancing rates with a company like Credible. Or, some other options are Earnest and SoFi.

Now you may be wondering where the free money comes in!

Well, these companies currently offer sign on bonuses when you refinance with them. For example, SoFi offers a $500 welcome bonus when you sign up with them (read their terms and conditions and learn more here). Earnest have similar cash bonuses when you sign up with them which you can learn more about here. And Credible have a few options for sign up cash bonuses which you can read about here.

This is definitely worth looking into if you have student loan debt.

2. Use Capital One Shopping

Capital One Shopping is a browser extension that you can install and save money on your online purchases. It works by finding relevant, working coupon codes for any purchases you make online.

This browser extension is free to use and will generally save you some money for your purchases online – essentially giving you free money back on your purchases. So if you’re someone who loves a discount but hates spending time shopping around for the best deal, then using this browser extension could be perfect for you!

Again, this is completely free to use. They have 4.9/5 stars on the Chrome store and you can install the browser extension with just a few easy clicks.

3. Receive Cash Bonuses When You Open a New Bank Account

Many banks routinely offer cash bonuses for hundreds and even thousands of dollars when you open an account with them.

One example is with Citibank, where you can get up to $250 when you open a checking or savings account with them.

Of course, many banks will require you to deposit a certain amount of money either up front or as minimum monthly deposits. So this is something to be aware of and you will need to look into. But if you’re in a position to start some serious savings then the bank will essentially give you free money when you deposit money into your accounts.

4. Take Surveys For Money!

As mentioned earlier in this post, you can get free money now by taking surveys with Survey Junkie. They are a totally free resource that I use to earn a bit of extra cash just by taking surveys online.

The questions are as easy as pie to answer in a multiple choice format making it very simple and quick to use!

You can redeem cash via PayPal after answering their straightforward survey questions.

I like to use the rewards for small expenses like food, groceries and coffee purchases. Oh and they also have excellent TrustPilot reviews!

Want to maximize your earnings? I highly recommend using Swagbucks to get the most out of the rewards. The more sites/apps you use, the more rewards you will earn.

5. Sign Up with InboxDollars (FREE $5)

That’s right, you can earn free money and gift cards when you sign up and use InboxDollars.

If you’re looking for free money hacks and ways to earn extra cash online, this is a great way to do it. InboxDollars is a free online rewards club that gives you paid surveys and other ways to earn cash. This is a similar one to other survey sites like Swagbucks and Survey Junkie, but with InboxDollars you can earn money for doing things you already do online – things like reading emails, shopping, taking surveys and playing games.

When you sign up for InboxDollars, you’ll get a $5 sign on bonus here just for joining. InboxDollars is free to join and you can cash out your earnings once you’ve reached $30.

6. Get Free Money From Your Employer

Chances are, your employer offers some sort of benefits package that includes things like health insurance and paid time off. But did you know that your employer might also offer some form of financial assistance?

It’s true! Many employers offer programs that can help you with things like student loan repayment, tuition assistance, and even down payment assistance for a home. And the best part is, these programs are often totally free!

So if you’re looking for ways to get some free money from your employer, definitely take the time to check your contract and get in touch with your HR department to see what they can offer you.

7. Open a Roth IRA Account For Tax-Free Money

Firstly, what is a Roth IRA account? It’s a type of IRA (Individual Retirement Account) that allows you to contribute after-tax money. This means that you have already paid taxes on the money you contribute, and you won’t have to pay taxes on it again when you withdraw it in retirement.

The top benefits of having a Roth IRA account is that you can withdraw your money at any time without a penalty. And the fact that your money can grow tax-free.

If you’re thinking about opening a Roth IRA account, be sure to do your research and compare different accounts to find the best one for you. A good place to start is by viewing the information here at TD Ameritrade.

8. Earn Cash Back and Rewards with Credit Cards

Before I go any further on this one, I want to be clear that I am all about paying off consumer debt and credit cards to live a healthy financial life.

But if you use credit cards wisely, they can actually make you a lot of money!

And in this case, with a Chase Freedom Credit Card, you can earn $200 when you spend $500 in the first 3 months of your account opening. So if you have an expense you know coming up like a vacation, flights, new television, new furniture etc. Then you can use the credit card to make the purchase and earn $200.

On top of this, they have offers where you can get cashback on your groceries. To check this offer out and learn more, read more here.

9. Get Paid To Sleep!

I love sleep. Oh boy do I love the feeling of my head hitting the pillow and being taken away to the land of nod.

I mean, is there anything better than a good night’s sleep??

Indeed there is, and that’s by getting paid to do it!

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t get enough sleep. And if you’re looking for a way to make some extra cash, you may want to participate in a sleep study.

Various studies have shown that sleep deprivation can have a negative impact on your health, so there is a need for research on this topic. Therefore, many sleep labs are always looking for participants to help with their studies.

Some places will even pay you a few thousand dollars for your time and commitment to the study!

If you’re interested in participating, here are a few places you can apply to:

17. Find Unclaimed Money

Did you know that there’s over $40 billion in unclaimed money in the United States? That’s a lot of money left on the table!

If you think you could have some unclaimed money somewhere, it’s definitely worth checking. Especially if you have moved states, changed names, you are or were a small business owner or you’re an heir to someone deceased.

There are a few ways to find out if you have any unclaimed money.

You can search for your name(s) on sites like Unclaimed.org or MissingMoney.com. And you can also check with your state’s unclaimed property office.

18. Receive Incentives For Energy Saving Resources

The United States federal government offers tax incentives, grants, and loans to encourage Americans to use renewable energy resources. Such as solar power, wind power, and geothermal power. There are also state and local government programs that offer these same types of incentives.

If you’re thinking about using renewable energy resources for your home or business, it’s worth looking into these government programs. Incentives can make renewable energy more affordable and they can help you save money on your energy bills.

19. Improve Your Credit Score and Save Thousands!

Something that may not be obvious but makes absolute sense, is improving your credit score to save a lot of money!

Your credit score is a three-digit number that lenders use to decide whether to give you a loan and at what interest rate. A high credit score means you’re a low-risk borrower, which could save you thousands of dollars over the life of a loan.

So what can you do to improve your credit score? You can start by paying your bills on time, keeping your credit card balances low, and not opening new credit cards unnecessarily. You can also check your credit report for any errors and dispute any inaccuracies you find.

Improving your credit score does take time and effort, but it can be well worth it in the long run. So if you’re thinking about taking out a loan, be sure to check your credit score first and see how you can improve it.

There are many legitimate ways to get free money. From taking surveys, participating in research studies to opening bank accounts and taking advantage of rewards. These ways can all help you save or make some extra money.

Yes, a little effort is required, but these are opportunities that can be well worth your time.

Whichever way you choose to get free money, make sure you do your research and use companies that have a trustworthy reputation. Unfortunately there are too many scams out there that will promise you free money but in reality are a huge waste of your time.

With some effort on your part, you can find healthy ways to get free money to help you boost your income.
