1. Upcycling Furniture

Do you ever look at a piece of furniture and think, that would look great in a different color! Or a fresh lick of paint would spruce it up nicely. Maybe you get the itch to start sanding something, bringing it back to life?

This is exactly what my husband and I did to a couple of items of furniture we had but didn’t need. And we managed to make $850 by doing this to old furniture. It really wasn’t all that difficult either! We simply sanded, painted/varnished and sold on facebook marketplace.

Now this blog keeps me nice and busy so I won’t be going into the flipping furniture niche because I simply don’t have the time. But it’s an excellent way to make a profit either as a full time business or for cash on the side – like we did.

The things we did up recently and sold were a wooden coffee table and wooden chest of drawers. These types of items sell really well on marketplace and it took less than a week for people to get in touch wanting to buy our upcycled furniture.

Now, if you’re thinking but Liz I don’t have any furniture to sell! That’s no problem because you can pick things up on the cheap, or even better, for FREE and fix them up and sell them for a profit. You can search facebook marketplace or yard sales for old items you want to fix up and sell. This is one of the easiest ways to make some extra cash so I highly recommend giving it a go!

2. Participated in Market Research Groups

My husband and I made a few hundred dollars each by participating in market research groups.

You can easily sign up and apply for studies to take part in and get paid. Or, they will get in touch with you letting you know there’s availability for various study groups. Some of these are in person, others are online.

Some studies we’ve participated in recently have been about grocery shopping habits, health supplements and products usage and minor clinical trials.

There are some very high paying clinical trials that you can do, provided you’re fit and healthy and meet all the criteria. These are typically a lot more involved and you would need to be open to staying in hospital for a week or more and would really need to consider if it’s something you could do. But, they pay extremely well for your time. Some up to $600 per day for your time!

Participating in paid focus groups and clinical trials is a great way to earn some decent cash if it suits your circumstances. Jump onto Google and have a look for paid market research groups near you.

3. Referee at Local Sports Clubs

I’ll keep this one short and sweet. This is something my husband has done in the past to earn an extra $100 to $200 a week. And it didn’t take him long to work his way up to the higher paying referee positions either!

Check out your local sports clubs and see if they need referees. They may have trainee positions to start with, then the more you learn and study the game (if you don’t have prior experience), the more you can earn.

This is especially good if you have an interest in the sport already, but it’s not essential. You might find that learning something new and doing something a bit different all while being paid for it is just what you need!

4. Taken Surveys

I know I know, I go on about surveys a lot on my site, but I can’t help it when it’s the easiest way to get money for free!

What I love about surveys is how easy they are to do, take little time and they accrue money or points quietly in the background. I like to complete surveys when I’m waiting in the car or at the hair salon. Then, I check my balance at the end of the year and redeem for free gift cards and cash. This comes in handy when purchasing Christmas gifts for friends and family. Or just to treat myself to my favorite drink or Target splurge!

Taking surveys is such a simple way to earn some money on the side, save up for a big purchase like a new laptop, phone or those Apple airpods you’ve been eyeing. I highly recommend completing surveys and earning rewards to cash out on something you really need or want. You can check out these posts to find out more about taking paid surveys:

5. Sold Our Old Stuff

Every now and then we do a big cleanout of the things we keep in storage, but don’t actually need. It not only gets rid of clutter, it’s a good way to make a bit of extra cash with minimal effort.

Some things we’ve been able to sell that we no longer wanted but made good money from have been:

  • Golf club set
  • Camera
  • Guitar amp
  • Planter boxes
  • Sporting gear
  • Upcycled furniture
  • Small kitchen appliances

And if you don’t have anything to sell or get rid of, you can always head down the path of buying old items, sprucing them up and selling for a profit. Also known as ‘flipping items’.

Some people I’ve seen do this as a side hustle and make really good money from it! So it’s definitely something to consider to make spare cash from home.

6. Weekend Odd Jobs

We all wish we could get paid for the things we have to do anyway! Like cleaning the house, putting furniture together, painting, moving house etc. Well what if it turns out that you can get paid to do these types of jobs during the week or on weekends?

You may have heard about sites you can sign up to and complete odd jobs or “micro tasks” for money. The way it works is you head over to a website like TaskRabbit, sign up and look for jobs you can complete at night or the weekends or just whenever you’re free.

Some of the popular types of jobs on TaskRabbit include:

  • Furniture assembly
  • TV mounting
  • Cleaning
  • Painting
  • Home repairs
  • Help moving

I highly recommend signing up for these types of jobs that pay good cash and can actually be quite fun to do!

7. Rented Out Car Space

If you happen to have extra parking space, you could make some extra cash by renting it out to someone who needs a convenient spot. You can turn that idle space into a little money-making side hustle.

Specialized parking rental services make it super easy to connect with people looking for a convenient place to park their cars. You just list your space, set a reasonable price and boom! You’re making money off that extra square footage!

It’s a win-win situation where you help someone find parking, and you earn a little extra on the side.

8. Completed Daily Tasks

Turning daily tasks into a side hustle is a fantastic way to make extra money without drastically changing your schedule. My husband and I often explore online platforms that offer rewards for completing simple tasks.

There are various websites and apps that will pay you to complete surveys, watch videos and play games, or test new apps. These are generally easy to do and can be done in your free time.

We also sign up for cashback and rewards programs that offer incentives for our everyday purchases. Platforms like Rakuten, Swagbucks or Fetch Rewards give cashback or gift cards for shopping through their links. When you sign up and use these platforms, you can easily earn rewards throughout the year.

More ideas to make extra money is through gig economy apps that connect people with local tasks. Things like running errands, pet-sitting (as mentioned above), or grocery shopping for others. As well as TaskRabbit, you could sign up to Gigwalk and find more tasks to complete for cash. The key is to find tasks that align with your own skills and interests, so you don’t get bored. With consistency and a little research, these daily tasks can contribute significantly to your side hustle income.

9. Dog Walking/Sitting

There are so many families/couples/people who need their little furry friend looked after at times. Many people can’t take their pets with them on holiday, and would rather have their pets minded by someone local than putting them into care with a vet – which can get very pricey!

So, that’s where you come in and can offer to take people’s pets when needed. Overnight care will always pay more. And if you have the appropriate space and means to take on a pet for a little pet vacay, it’s a nice thing to do for someone while earning some extra cash.

A good way to connect with people needing their pet minded would be through local facebook community groups. Or, you can sign up to a pet-sitting company like Rover, where you can earn up to $1000 a month by being a pet-sitter!

10. Blogging

This was something I started a couple of years ago and I really enjoy doing.

I love being able to share my ideas and write about personal finance topics that interest me and help others. My number one goal is to help you manage your money and live a better and happier life, because I genuinely care about people and want to help.

This year, I researched how to earn more money from my blog, as I’ve only really been making money through affiliate marketing. While this has been great, I wanted to diversify my income streams and find out more about making money with Google ads. And now, I’ve actually earnt my first $100 from Google Adsense. And it only took a couple of months!

While that may not seem like anything ground-breaking, I’m really happy and excited about it. That, combined with earnings from affiliate marketing has shown me what blogging can do. It’s a good start and I’m still learning.

The main reason it’s exciting for me is it has really boosted my confidence in the online space. And I don’t mean in some big egotistical kind of way. Far from it!

You see, starting a blog and putting yourself out there online can be incredibly daunting for someone like me. Because I’m someone who takes things pretty seriously, and at times need to tell myself to lighten up. And it’s hard having a sensitive and often shy at times personality and putting yourself out there in the big old world and being vulnerable.

Blogging as a Beginner…

I started this blog because I didn’t want to work for anyone else – I wanted something cheap and convenient to get into and I found blogging to be exactly that. I also really wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and help them better their situations. Now, I get to learn new things constantly, share my ideas, struggles and my journey of making money online. I’m not an expert, but I find when I’m talking to friends and other people about blogging that I actually know quite a lot about blogging! I can see how far I’ve come and what I’ve taught myself. And that’s a pretty good feeling.

If you want to learn more about blogging and even set up your own blog, I detail this in my post How To Start A Profitable Blog in 2024 – Step-By-Step.

I’ve got some exciting things planned for 2024 with my blog, so make sure you stay tuned!
